Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General FAQs

Where can I find a copy of the policy?

You can access your travel insurance policy in a few easy ways:

  • After getting a quote: The policy document is available once you generate a quote on the Redpoint website.
  • In your email: If you save your quote, you’ll receive an email with your quote and policy documents attached.
  • Before you buy: You can review the policy on the purchase page for each Redpoint program before completing your purchase.

Note: Policy documents are State specific. Please refer to your specific policy documents.

Am I covered if I get sick or injured, or if a family member gets sick or injured?

Yes, coverage may apply if you, a family member, a traveling companion, or a business partner become sick or injured before your trip and need to cancel or interrupt your plans.

In Section IV the policy states the following:

“Your, a Family Member’s, a Traveling Companion’s or Business Partner’s Sickness or Injury, that:

  1. occurs before departure on Your Trip;
  2. is examined and treated by a Physician prior to cancellation unless it is not reasonably possible to do so; and
  3. as certified by a Physician, results in medical restrictions so disabling as to cause You to cancel Your Trip;

Sickness or Injury of Your Business Partner must be so disabling as to reasonably cause You to cancel Your Trip to assume daily management of the business.

Note: Policy documents are State specific. Please refer to your specific policy documents.

What trip cost should I insure?

You should insure the total amount of your trip that is non-refundable or has cancellation penalties.

This typically includes:

  • Payments or deposits you’ve already made
  • Any costs you are required to pay if you cancel or interrupt your trip
  • Only the amounts you list when you enroll in coverage

A few important notes:

  • The cost must be for your trip and not refundable by your travel provider
  • Digital currencies (like Bitcoin) are not covered
  • Coverage only applies to the amount you choose to insure

If your trip isn’t priced per person (like a shared hotel or rental), the total cost is usually split evenly among all travelers, and you should insure your share.

Note: Policy documents are State specific. Please refer to your specific policy documents.

Can I cover trip costs not booked through my travel provider?

Yes, you can insure any prepaid, non-refundable trip costs, even if they weren’t booked through your travel provider. Just make sure the costs are non-refundable and included when you select your coverage amount.

Can I include my flight cost?

Yes, you can include your flight in your total trip cost.

However, coverage for airfare only applies if:

The airline does not offer a refund or travel credit when you cancel

If your ticket is refundable or eligible for a credit, you generally don’t need to include it in your insured trip costs

Is war covered

Redpoint policies have an exclusion stating “We will not pay for any loss or expense caused by, due to, arising or resulting from…war or act of war, including invasion, acts of foreign enemies, hostilities between nations (whether declared or undeclared), or civil war, except as the policy specifically provides otherwise;”

Note: Limitations and exclusions are found under Section VII. Please refer to your specific policy for more details.

Am I covered if my work revokes approved time off?

Coverage may be available, depending on the details of your policy.

To find out if you’re covered, review Section IV (Coverages) of your policy, as specific terms and conditions apply.

Coverage can vary by state, so be sure to check your individual policy document.

What’s the difference between Ripcord, Cavalry, and Harbor?

Ripcord, Cavalry, and Harbor are different Redpoint plans, each offering varying levels of coverage and benefits.

To compare what each plan includes and find the best fit for your trip, view our plan comparison here.

Why should I purchase Travel Insurance sooner rather than later?

Once you pay your non-refundable trip costs, you should purchase a Redpoint Travel Protection program. If you are within the early purchase window of your initial trip deposit date, you will make yourself eligible for the highest level of coverage, including maintaining eligibility for the pre-existing condition waiver and access to all covered reasons for trip cancellation and interruption.

Even if you past the early purchase window, the Redpoint Travel Protection programs are designed to protect against unforeseen events. Any event that occurs before your program purchase would not be covered by your policy. Travel insurance cost is also based on the traveler’s age at time of purchase. By purchasing now, you will secure the most extensive level of trip cost protection for you and your family at the lowest price.

Is travel insurance* a waste of money?

No, not at all. It provides valuable financial protection and peace of mind in case of trip cancellations & interruptions, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and other unforeseen circumstances. Investing in travel insurance ensures that you are covered and prepared for unexpected events during your travels.

What do I need to know about pre-existing medical conditions and the coverage through Redpoint Travel Protection*?

Pre-existing Medical Condition Exclusions would likely be applicable to a condition of a traveler, traveling companion or family member who was first diagnosed, had a change in diagnosis or required a change in medication during the 90 day look back period immediately preceding and including the effective date of coverage. Some plans include a Pre-existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver when purchasing the plan within a specified time frame immediately following initial trip payment.*

If I use frequent flyer miles to purchase a ticket, do I include the regular cost of the ticket as part of my trip cost?

Please be careful when using frequent flyer miles to calculate your trip cost. Travel insurance* typically covers the cash value of non-refundable travel expenses. In other words, money you can’t get back from your airline or other travel provider. Frequent flyer miles are not covered as it’s difficult to determine their cash value.

What else is offered with the purchase of a Redpoint Travel Protection plan?

Redpoint programs include access to our Travel Services team.  This team includes medical and security experts to assist with medical consultations and referrals, medical evacuation, emergency cash transfers, pre-trip consultation services, and emergency messaging.

Can I purchase travel insurance* coverage on an annual basis?

No, we do not offer travel insurance* policies on an annual basis. We do provide annual evacuation services under our Ripcord and Cavalry membership programs.

What program should I choose if I only want trip cancellation coverage*?

We do not offer a product that provides only trip cancellation coverage. For budget conscious travelers, we suggest reviewing our Harbor travel protection program.

Where can I find a copy of the travel insurance policy*?

A copy of the travel insurance* policy document can be found on the purchase page of each Redpoint program before you purchase. Policy documents are state specific.

What is covered in terms of trip cancellation or interruption*?

The list of unforeseen events for trip cancellation and interruption coverages can be found in Section IV Coverages of the travel insurance policy. Details regarding the optional “Cancel For Any Reason” upgrade can be also be found in this section. General limitations and exclusions can be found in section VII.

What is “Cancel For Any Reason*”?

Cancel For Any Reason, or “CFAR”, coverage allows travelers to cancel for reasons not listed as an Unforeseen reason or otherwise excluded. General limitations and exclusions found at the back of the policy are still applicable. Details regarding CFAR coverage can be found in Section IV Coverages of the travel insurance policy document. Please note that “CFAR” is an early purchase benefit and must be purchased within a specified time frame immediately following initial trip payment.

Will the cost to purchase travel insurance* get cheaper as I get closer to my trip?

No, the length between the purchase date of your policy and the start date of your trip does not affect the cost to purchase coverage.

Is extreme skiing or heli-skiing covered?

Extreme activities, including heli-skiing, are generally not covered under evacuation and medical expense benefits.

Redpoint policies state:

“We will not pay for any loss or expense caused by, due to, arising or resulting from:…Your participation in Adventure or Extreme Activities, riding or driving in any races, or participation in speed or endurance competition or events, except as a spectator;”

Adventure or Extreme Activities are defined as:

“B.A.S.E. jumping, Mountain Climbing, bull riding, running of the bulls, bungee jumping, parachuting, skydiving, cliff diving, fly-by-wire, hang gliding, heli-skiing, heli-snowboarding, wingsuit flying, rock climbing without equipment, bodily contact sports, motor sport or motor racing, parkour, scuba diving if the depth exceeds 131 feet (40 meters) and any activity materially similar to the above.”

For full details, see Section VII (Limitations and Exclusions) of your policy.
